The Bikes We Ride

Written by 2RideTheWorld.

Building the R1200GSA LC Special

After 13-years on the road, on the same bikes, the idea of changing to new machines was as unnerving as it was wonderfully exciting. New bikes, new possibilities and a new leash of life. Exciting and bloody surreal! That’s how I’d describe our recent bike build orgy.

To anyone living in ‘the real world’, the idea of being handed new bikes and being lavished with upgrades and accessories is the stuff of, well, fairy tales. It just doesn’t happen in real life, does it? A chance social meeting with the CEO of ‘LXV OUTDOOR’ would change our lives.

2RTWTitle Slug Web  The Concept
The idea of what we wanted to create was clear; we wanted to take all that was best and exciting about our original bikes and transpose those modifications onto machines that were four generation younger. We wanted to make two heavy machines lighter, taller, more off-road capable and able to carry us through another 49 countries. I said the idea was clear, not simple.

BMW R1200GSA LC - F800GSR1200GSA LC SPECIAL & F800GS SPECIAL

We gathered the essentials; two bottles of our favourite rum (Guatemalan), ice, a notepad, a set of coloured pencils and a quiet room borrowed from a friend. We then sat and scribbled. We listed every modification and upgrade we’d made to our bikes over the last decade and scored their value. We needed to recognize what was bling and what had been essential. What was good, great or silly and what had genuinely added to the riding experience? It was longfriggin’ list!

“We’ll buy you two new bikes, any brand, any style and any model. What you two have done is incredible...but you need to finish this journey”. After coughing out whatever I was eating, I looked at Lisa, she stared at me and I eloquently sputtered “Uh, what”?

It was true, our bikes (a 1999 R1100GS and 2001 F650GS) were tired, but then so would you be after 400,000 miles.

Our bikes had done us proud, but for the last five to six years, we’d been the riding personification of the phrase “the definition of permanent is a temporary fix that’s holding”. Over the course of our 13-year global journey, we’d made hundreds of roadside repairs. In the end, all that was holding our precious babies together was cheap electrical wire and an assortment of hastily found nuts and bolts collected in countless backstreet bazaars from around the world. Haemorrhaging oil from engine cases had become our ‘normal’. Still, the idea of finishing our ride on anything else than these two bikes was as alien as it was unlikely. There’s no point denying it, we’d become (and are still) incredibly sentimental about our original bikes. After all, we’ve been through, how could we not be?

BMW Motorcycles of RivsersideR1200GSA buildingAfter weeks of deliberating and tonnes of soul searching, we excitedly accepted the offer. Following another 4 weeks of frantic two-wheeled research, we came full circle and chose to stick with a familiar brand. When we finally got our hands on the new bikes, a 2015 BMW F800GS for Lisa and a BMW 2015 R1200GSA LC for me, the pressure was on.

After 13-years on the road we’ve picked up a few ‘industry friends’, lucky really because if we were to have any chance of creating bikes that were as capable as our old steeds, we were going to need their support. Both bikes we purchased from BMW Motorcycles of Riverside, who had offered an incredible deal for the bikes but has also offered to sponsor the labor for the entire rebuild of both new machines.

We’d planned on reaching Deadhorse Alaska this year, but with winter fast approaching and our US visa’s running out, we were left with just 10 weeks to strip and rebuild both bikes.

Fast forward ten weeks and what we’ve ended up with are two motorcycles beyond belief. Think I’m being over-the-top? Normally with any project, there’s a degree of compromise, underpinned by budget, or lack thereof. Not here!

Let's look at how we transformed an already impressive machine, my R1200GSA and turned it into something unique that could take on the world.

2RTWTitle Slug Web The Trip

Our journey started in 2003 as a planned 16-month trip. It's crazy to realize we've now been we've now been riding for over a decade! Our journey began as a wonderfully ambitious but naive personal and private challenge, which over the course of 16-years on the road simply became our life and defined who we are today.

Before Facebook, Instagram, twitter and action cameras, we would sit and excitedly scribble lists of legendary locations we'd visit, deserts we wanted to ride, mountains we wanted to summit and cultures we wanted to immerse ourselves in. Finally the broad outlines were firmed up; Today these goals remain unchanged.

  • Ride through 122 countries
  • Ride on all seven continents
  • Ride from the most northerly to the most southerly point on each continent
  • Live to full and without regret

2RTWTitle Slug Web Getting Started and looking Back

On a wet and windy UK summer morning the two of us made a decision that would change our lives. After years of compromise in the corporate world, of spread-sheets, pointless meetings and life sucking commutes, we craved a change and a chance to write our own life story. As a couple, we wanted to step out of our comforts zones, face our fears and loosen our grip on the 'control' we'd always thought we'd needed, to be successful. There is restlessness and a curiosity in us both, that's always driven us to explore around the next bend and peak over the horizon.  It was time to let loose!

Our overland adventure has surpassed every crazy, scary, exhilarating, beautiful and overwhelming expectation we ever had. Riding side-by-side we've ridden from the most northerly parts of Scandanavia to the the southerly fringes of Patagonia and criss-crossed 6 continents. Along the way, we've put our lives in each others hands and lived more than either of us ever dared to image. We have proven that together that there is no challenge we cannot rise to, learn from and overcome. After 500,000 miles we have redefined in our own minds, the definition of success, and crucially even happiness.

Comments "I watched you and Simon Thomas give your talk in May 2008 in Eugene, it changed my life. I had picked up my new GS that morning.Your photo of you two hangs in my home. I hope are paths cross again this year. I hope someday both of you understand the depth of how you have changed the modern motorcycle community along with Ted Simon to show people it could be done”. Randy Perkins, via Facebook

Through the lens we've captured and shared our life for 14-years, sharing our triumphs and defeats and paving the way for others to follow in our tracks. Our lives are often challenging and frequently uncomfortable but thay are also vibrant and exhilarating. We've discovered a world of wonder, culture, camaraderie, value, strange beliefs, ancient traditions and trust, and our lives have been touched by incredible people on six continents, hopefully we've touched the lives of others, in turn. Together we've crossed mountain ranges and explored dusty trails and have thrived, struggled, lived and learnt and today we are craving more.

2RTWTitle Slug WebStaying On The Road

Like us, our journey as evolved and today our travels have connected with millions around the globe in a way we could never have imagined. In some small but meaningful way, we know that through sharing our experiences, our images and our writing, that we can inspire other to do the same. To travel is one of the greatest privileges and being able to share and motivate others is rewarding beyond measure.

Funny thing is...we set out to discover the world, and ended up discovering ourselves, and our tiny place on it.

In the mean time scan over the figures below and let us know what you think we a commentor two. See you down the road.

The name Touratech always crops up when people start talking about travelling and motorbikes. From its simple beginnings around a coffee table, the company has grown to become one of the world leaders in this sector today.

Touratech AG has been developing, designing and producing in southern Germany since it was established in 1997. From it's humble beginnings when two friends Herbert Schwarz and Jochen Schanz sat down to design their now legendary Zega panniers to Touratech's present days dominance of the motorcycle accessory market, Touratech have continued to innovate.

In late 2015 we recieved an incredible offer from LXV, the parent company of 4THEOUTDOORS.com. "We woudl like to to sponsor you with two new bikes of your choice. Your journey is inspiring and we want to be a part of it!" We sat and read that email a dozen times to ensure we understood its message. Weeks later we were the proud owners of a new BMW Motorrad R1200GSA LC and a BMW Motorrad F800GS. After 450,000 we were able to retire our trusty orignal bikes (R1100GS and F650GS). LXV Outdoor's incredible support has provided us a new lease of life and today we're ready to take on the rest of the world.

SENA simon

Passion for Adventure. Obsession with Perfection.

We believe there’s no such thing as a viable shortcut in the pursuit of a passion. We are all motorcycle riders and technology enthusiasts here at Sena, including our CEO. So when we develop new products, we go to great lengths to ensure the final version is everything we dreamed it could be ... and everything our customers expect it to be.

Along the way, we expect to shatter preconceived paradigms and challenge conventional limitations, especially when accompanied by the word “can’t.” We boldly lay our visions on the table to be critiqued and reshaped before we experiment and refine every technical detail, every design decision, and every material used until it’s just right. Then, we take our ideas for a ride ourselves to see if they can keep up with our own untamed senses of adventure ... and revise them again. Finally, we mark them with the Sena name, which represents our approval to be fit for the adventures our customers dream about. Adventures we’ll help them create and enhance.

This is the Sena way. Has been since we got our start in 1998. Our passion for adventure and obsession with perfection fuels us ... and hopefully translates through our products to inspire our customers to challenge the confines of their ordinary routines and pursue their own adventures of a lifetime. Sena. Advancing Adventure.

As SENA Brand Ambassadors and SENA 'Adventure Seekers' we are both continually blown away by the level of technology SENA products bring to our adventure. Over the years we've utilsed the SENA 10S, 20S and 10C to comminicate and today we're using the incredibly advanced and yet simple to use PRISM Action cameras to records and share our journey. With cutting edge tech and simple and intuative interfaces we're able to record and communicate in a way we never imagined possible. Across the toughest landscapes on the planet and through the harshest climates imaginable, our SENA systems simply perform. Awesome equipment, highly recommended.

continentalContinental was founded in Hanover in 1871 as the stock corporation “Continental-Caoutchouc- und Gutta-Percha Compagnie”. Manufacturing at the main factory in Hanover included soft rubber products, rubberized fabrics, and solid tires for carriages and bicycles.

In the late 1920s, the company merged with major companies in the rubber industry to form “Continental Gummi-Werke AG”.

In 1960 we brought the first environmentally friendly tires for passenger cars onto the market. In 1995 the Automotive Systems division was established to intensify the systems business with the automotive industry. We presented the key technology for hybrid drive systems back in 1997.

Today, Continental ranks among the top 5 automotive suppliers worldwide. As a supplier of brake systems, systems and components for powertrains and chassis, instrumentation, infotainment solutions, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers, Continental contributes to enhanced driving safety and global climate protection. Continental is also a competent partner in networked automobile communication.

The Continental TKC80's have been our tire of choice since 2001 and today we have ridden 99% of our entire record breaking journey on this incredible product. Conti tires have helped us ride and survive 27 of the world's deserts and seen us across six of the world's seven continents. We're especially proud to have been named as Brand Ambassadors in  2015, when Conti became an official 2RTW partner. We're thrilled to be able to continue riding with what we believe are the best tires on the planet. Having Continental Tires as a partner is a real privelidge.

Needless to say Lisa's pretty excited ride into Cuba, Jaimaica and back through Central America with her favourite boots, back on her feet.

The Lume Cubes works with our smart phones  for simple "in the moment' pictures as well as with our main camera gear for when we're creating something really special. The fact that they are waterproof just adds another layer of creativity to our photographic work that wasn't available to us prior to Lume Cube joining the team.  What's also great is that we can simply use the Lume Cubes as travel/adventure lights at night in our camp spot, and then simply recharge them via the USB charging ports on our bikes. glyph tech logoTwenty years may not seem like a long time, but for a digital data storage company it's a significant achievement. When technologies come and go almost as fast as the businesses that provide them, two decades is something to be proud of.

At Glyph, we honor our past — but we've built our reputation by looking to the future. Our uncompromising focus on simple elegance and rock-solid reliability for the most demanding workflows has won the hard-earned respect of professional content creators around the world. And we keep that respect with our service and support, as well as the best warranty in the business.

Whether you're laying down tracks, editing video or backing up precious photos... On the road with a mobile drive or in the studio with a lightning fast RAID... You can trust Glyph when it matters most.

After over a decade of travelling we were struggling to manage our vast collection of media. We've kept almost 2-million images from our journey along with Terra-bytes of video footage, not to mention all the graphics and design work that goes into our website. Lisa and I were both thrilled and relieved when Glyph Technologies shook our hands and agreed to come on board as our media storage sponsor. With over 20-years of expertise and some of the most reliable, powerful and portable drives in the market, we know we're in great hands. With stunning 2TB drives that are barely larger than a credit card, the Glyph ATOM drives are an incredible addition to our "on the road" digital tool-box. Knowing that all our data is stored and backed up safely, is a huge game changer for us both. A huge thank you to all the team at Glyph technologies.

WoodysWheelWorks 2We have been in the wheel repair/restoration/build business since 1973.

At Woody's Wheel Works, we believe in the art of the wheel.

As much as a love for wrenching, we are driven by a philosophy that the wheel is nothing less than the most important invention of all time whose utility is seen in all things, big and small. Since the evidence of the first wheel in ancient Mesopotamia it has worked its way into the soul of humanity. With soul-craft we preserve the harmony between man-and-machine, and this awareness inspires the quality and performance that has made Woody's Wheel Works legendary since 1973.

I (Simon) first connected with the master wheel builders at Woody's Wheel Works 9-years, when I wanted to upgrade my R1100GS front wheel to a 21". Woody laced my stock BMW R1100 hub to a tubeless BMW cross-laced 21" hp2 rim, whicj perfomred perfectly and is still on the bike today. When it came time to upgrade our two new rides (R1200GSA LC & F800GS) we knew immediatley that Woody's were the only real choice. Both our bikes are running custom wheel sets, which if were not on the bikes, we'd be wearing as jewelery, there are that pretty. See full details here: 21" wheel build review.

hillebergIn 1971, Bo Hilleberg, a professional forester, founded his own company, Hilleberg AB. That same year, while on a ski vacation in the Austrian Tyrol, Bo met Renate Neuner. After a couple of years, the two had fallen in love, married, and she had moved with him to Stockholm, Sweden. Their marriage was the final, necessary ingredient in the mix that has become Hilleberg the Tentmaker.

Before Renate, Bo’s fledgling company was primarily a forestry equipment concern, with tent making as a hoped-for sideline. An avid, lifelong outdoorsman, Bo was terminally frustrated with tents that required pitching the inner tent first and then covering it with a loose rain fly that usually displayed the same properties as a kite in the wind. He envisioned a tent that had an outer and inner tent that pitched together, simultaneously – but he didn’t have the necessary sewing skills. With Bo and Renate’s marriage, conjugal and commercial became one: Renate took charge of the sewing while Bo handled design and sales, and with their combined efforts, the company flourished.

Today, family and business are still inextricably linked. Bo is Chairman, and is still in charge of design and development; daughter Petra handles all company business outside of Europe; and Bo, Renate, Petra and her brother Rolf make up the governing board of directors – clearly, family synergy continues to beget success.

Way back in 2002 we had exhaustively searched the market in order to find a tent manufacturer and product that would provide us sanctuary in the very worst weather the world would throw at us. After months of searching we found Hilleberg and their incredible Keron 4GT. The Keron 4GT is Hilleberg's top of the line, four person, all season unit, it's also a favourite amongst some of the worlds most elite fighting forces. From the frozen peaks of Asia's Pamir Mountain Range to the blistering heat of the Sahara, our Keron 4GT has never let us down and after 14-years on the road remains our tent of choice. We have proudly been Hilleberg brand Ambassadors since 2008.

msrIn 1969, Seattle engineer and lifelong mountaineer Larry Penberthy formed Mountain Safety Research as a one-man crusade dedicated to improving the safety of climbing equipment. The fuel behind Larry's passionate fire was a simple belief that still drives our team today:

The idea that better, safer, more reliable equipment is the key to unlocking greater adventures.

From that notion evolved a pioneering outdoor company whose innovations have revolutionized the way people experience the outdoors worldwide. Today, we're a close-knit team still obsessed with designing the most reliable, high-performance gear possible, using our knowledge of engineering and science to find better solutions to the challenges of the mountains.

At MSR, we are engineers, tinkerers and passionate outdoor users–each with strong perspectives on how a product should work based on our own experiences in the wild places we love. But collectively, we believe that innovative solutions are bred by challenging convention, and that functionality, simplicity and reliability are the governing elements of enduring design. Today, many MSR products are still hand-built on manufacturing lines just a floor below where we concept them.

And we're still driven to engineer gear for those who believe a trusted companion can be as simple as a 20-year-old stove that burns strong on family backpacking trips, to a water filter that provides the safe hydration needed to fuel the greatest expeditions into the farthest reaches of the globe.

Better choices lead to a better life and that's certainly true when you have to rely on camping gear all year around, across 6 continents and through 78 countries. We love each other, travel, motorcycles and food, so when it came to choosing a high quality multi-fuel camp stove, all our research pointed toward one brand MSR. We now been using MSR's dragon Fly multi-fuel stove and camp cooking ware for over a decade. If you need ease of use, field servicable and repairable camp gear that will take years of abuse and come back for more then look no further. MSR gear is as good as it gets.

thermarestIn 1971, a fortuitous mix of unemployed engineers, a leaky foam gardening pad, and the dream of a better way to sleep under the stars came together to change how we experience the outdoors forever. As climbers, Jim Lea, Neil Anderson and John Burroughs knew firsthand that long days in the hills were only made longer by a horrible night's rest, and a better sleeping pad was key to changing that equation. This blend of science and a desire to make the most of every day outdoors created the world's first self-inflating air mattress, and it continues to be the fuel that drives us today.

Today, Therm-a-Rest remains at the forefront of comfort innovation and quality, with a commitment to building what we make, with our own hands, whenever possible.

A great night's sleep is something we all need, especially if your day's require a maximum concentration, as you ride across the world's most demanding terrain. Our Thermarest Prolite mattresses are amongst our camping essentials. These incredibly durable and superbly comfy mattresses are easy and fast to inflate and still provide that feeling of luxury, not matter the surface.

BrooksCycleWebsite Designed by Brooks Cycle, llc © 2017 at Homestead™ Create a Website and List Your Business

After serving eight Years in the Marine Corps, Jason Brooks decided to go in to business for himself. In its humble beginnings, the business didn't have a shop or a garage. All Motorcycle Repairs were completed on the road at the customer's house, by dragging tools to the repair site in an old Jeep Cherokee. Jason quickly made a name for himself as the only traveling Motorcycle Mechanic in Virginia. In early 2007, Jason moved operations to a shop built into his Town-house's garage and began to grow a strong customer base. His steadfast devotion to quality and customer service quickly made Brooks Cycle Center the most sought-after Motorcycle Shop in Virginia. Answering to the call of their customers, they continue to provide on-site service. Since the beginning, Brooks Cycle Center has been raising the bar for a new standard of Customer Service in the Motorcycle Service Industry. Today, they are Northern Virginia's premier Motorcycle Service Station with exceptionally high standards of quality, price, and customer service.

In 2016 Brooks Cycle Center joined the 2RTW team and is now the official supplier of our chain and sprocket kits used by Lisa on her F800GS Special. When we need replacements it's great to know that we have the service and reliability of Jason and his team on hand.

MotoSkiveezMy name is Shawn Lupcho and I am the creator of Moto-Skiveez.

Moto-Skiveez evolved from the combined experience of over twenty years as a competitive cyclist and almost 35 years as an avid motorcyclist.

In creating Moto-Skiveez, I’ve enlisted the design expertise of the TMF research facility in Verona, Italy. TMF is renowned for the quality and innovation they’ve applied to creating bicycling pads. They have a research center inside the company for the purpose of developing original and innovative solutions to improve riding comfort and performance. TMF has been at the forefront of design for more than thirty years. thermal view of a body

Their proprietary process utilizes thermal imaging camera systems placed between the rider and the saddle to measure body temperature in the prostatic/perineal area. They also use computerized sensors that reveal pressure applied at the points of contact. This helps determine the correct type of material to be incorporated into the pad. Moto-Skiveez has employed this technology to create three unique pads, each targeted to a specific style of motorcycle riding.

Our Moto-Skiveez have become our go-to riding underwear. When you're riding as much as we do, excellent technical pieces of riding gear can make a word of difference. Do yourself a favour and grab a pair from your nearest stockist.

seat conceptsAt Seat Concepts we pride ourselves in offering what we believe to be the best seat foam and cover products available for adventure and dual-sport motorcycles, at an affordable price.

Seat Concepts PRODUCTS are made and developed here in the U.S.A. by true motorcycle enthusiasts. We ride and race what we sell.

Seat Concepts dual-sport / adventure seat-kits incorporate a wider seating area for the rider, which results in a more even weight distribution, while reducing pressure points. Each individual seat model was specially designed to increase comfort without compromising ride-ability. The more aggressive the bike, the more aggressive our seat-kit.

At just 5ft 2", Lisa's 'tall' BMW Motorrad F800GS was going to need a very special seat in order to allow her to get her toes on the ground and yet still provide a comfortable riding position, that would deal with her often 12-hour riding days. Lisa installed the custom built Seat Concepts seat in early 2016 and hasn't looked back. It's stunningly crafted with attention to details and uses premium materials. Highly recommended.

Adventure Designs have been one of our longest supporters, and have truly been a pleasure wot work with. Over the years the Olsen brothers (owners) have supplied us everything from POV cameras to pocket knives and each has performed perfectly. Better still, it's great to be able to work and chat with business owners who actually ride. From motorcycle accessories to safety gear  to camping gear, ADV designs has the lot. Check out their website, you'll be impressed.

fasst logo

Fasst Company began with a mission to create products that serve a true purpose; that key element still remains as we create handmade motorcycle & ATV products to provide you with a better day riding.

Each one of us is here to help you get the most out of your products through top-level customer support. Call our team at (877) 306-1801 or email us for questions, support or setup tips.

We were introdued to Fasst Company back in late 2015 by BMW Motorcycles of Riverside who built our new bikes. We'd been looking for a strong replacement for the stock OEM BMW handlebars, which although good, have too much of an angled sweep-back (19o) for Lisa and I. The Flexx Bars by Fasst Company could be produced with a perfect 12o and came with buit in vibration reduction. The bars really have to be felt to be believed. The design and materials are top-draw and they perform brilliantly, making tough off-road rides more contrable and long saddle days less tiring.. These bars are make the GS feel like it was always meant to. Better handling, better rider position and improved comfort, that's one hell of a list of improvements. Highly recommend.
