Norway - Fjord initiation.
We left the campsite in rain again. No matter how you look at it, it's demoralizing.
Out of Bergen and we easily joined the E39 as our best option to cross Norway's best known fjord, the immense Sognefjorden. This vast body of water is also the second longest in the world. It was time to tackle our first ferry crossing. As we arrived in the ferry waiting area we were hit with our first dilemma of the day.
Three ferries leave from the dock, and although the ships are named on big yellow boards, their destinations are not...ermm... Useful!
Oh well we thought, we’ll just board the one with the biggest queue. Ten minutes later a bike flew past us and was headed directly to the front of the queue we were in. Not to be outdone we quickly joined him and struck up a conversation. This was Sven-Erickson, founder member and web master for the holy-rider Motorcycle club.
When Sven wasn’t bombing around on his on his trusty Honda in his grungy leathers, he’s a respectable dentist with several smart practices scattered around Norway. Sven explained his English was good but could we forgive his strange accent as he’d lived in New York for 15-years and he’d picked up a distinctive twang.
Sven carried on chatting as we waited for the ferry and gladly shared that in Norway Motorbikes are allowed to use bus and taxi lanes, and generally are ushered to the front of queues. Fine by us we thought.
On-board the ferry we paid our 38 Kroner each, this was going to eat into our budget and just 20 minutes later we were bouncing off the slippery deck and back onto tarmac. We said goodbye to Sven and made our way up the E39 to Forde – aiming for the town of Alesund.
Today's been incredible, but I'm knackered. With mountains, immense fjords and a landscape that looks almost prehistoric, it's easier to let the photos do the talking. Enjoy.
As the day went on and the miles clocked up we realized that to reach Alesund was going to be pushing it. It was just too far for us to reach today.
With heavy eyes and weary limbs we called it a day as we rode into Folkestad, a small town before the ferry crossing to Volda.
Today we had 2 ferry crossings at approx. 38NOK each. and ended our day camping at Helset Hytter og Camping, Bjorkedal, Folkestad.
