Hi there, and thanks for joining us for our 5th episode in our "Behind The Scene" series, where we get to share some of the background stories, behind each of the images that we've chosen for our 2021 ADV Bike Calendar. The image we've chosen for APRIL is an important one for us and you'll soon see why!
We had been dreaming about riding and exploring Bolivia since 2002 and it's all BMW's fault. All becaue of one beautiful and inspring printed bit of paper.

I got to admit that there was a few pangs of nervous excitement, when the message came into my email inbox.
Well, it's not everyday that the Global Brand and Marketing Director of a global photo superpower contacts you and invites you onto YouTube. But, there it was, an email from Alastair Jolly, written in his usual low key and easy manner. It read..."do fancy coming on the show, I'd love to share your story."
The first thing Lisa and I did was subscribe to smugmugs Official YouTube Channel to have a quick squiz at who else smugmug had on thier "smugmug LIVE" video Series. Yeah, that didn't help those pangs of excited anxiety!
The last photographer to be interviewed was Daniel Korden, one of my personal favourite photographers and near legendary image creator with almost 2 million followers on Instagram and 125,000 fans on Facebook. Before Daniel, Helen Sloan, an incredible professional and the official still photographer for the cult TV series "Game Of Thrones." had shared her story and wonderful images.
The list of incredibly talented and dedicated photographic creators and educators, that smugmug have had on the show is nothing short of inspiring. Honestly, do yourself a favour and watch some of these wonderful interviews. I promise, the time spent will leave you feeling inspired. Needless to say, in light of Alastair's previous guests, Lisa and I felt a little...amateur.
We'll let you be the judge. Our smugmug **LIVE** interview is just below. It was a lot of fun, thanks in large part to Alastair's easy interview technique, which felt more like a relaxed chat with a friend about photography and quickly put us as ease.
We had no idea which of our images he was going to choose to discuss, and we were both surprised at some of his favourite shots. We'd all agreed that the interview should last about an hour, with questions coming in from the audience via YouTube's 'LIVE CHAT" feature. We ended up having such a good time that the hour came and went and stretched quiet a bit longer.
It goes without saying, we want to thank both Alastair and smugmug for giving us the time and opportunity to share our photographic story. We'd love to hear your thoughts. So, sit back give yourself a little time and hit play. Thanks for dropping by.
Note: There is a two minute static intro. I fyou dont want to wait (i didn't) just drag the red video play-head slider two minutes to the right.

Simon and Lisa Thomas have spent most of the last 18 years on their motorcycles, travelling from place to place around the world. British born, they’ve evolved their passion for travel in to a lifestyle and their livelihood. They speak at events, are professional photographers and authors and they stay in touch with the motorcycle community through their website and social media pages.
When Simon and Lisa started out in 2003, information on motorcycle adventure travel wasn't as prevalent on the internet as it is now. Although Facebook debuted in 2004 it didn’t become popular until 2009, and other platforms that are still around today didn’t start to show up until 2006, so earlier travellers mainly relied on word of mouth, some internet forums, the written word, and mentors or role models.
Since Carl Stearns Clancy first circumnavigated the world in 1912-1913 and Ted Simon in the 1970’s, these icons paved the way for other moto travellers who saw them as role models. And as motorcycle travel and tourism has evolved, we have since looked towards modern day long-distance riders or world travellers for inspiration.
The Thomas' have been a source of motivation for many motorcyclists and their years of knowledge and experience speak volumes, whether it’s about making connections, different cultures, border crossings or cooking a great meal.
